Ever since FileMaker released a version of its award-winning software for the iPhone and the iPad, we have had a string of requests to build solutions that differ from your traditional databases. Functionality ranging from order tracking while out and about to restaurant menu systems.
One such request was deployed for a client enabling them to link in real-time between the shop floor and the store room of a clothing retail store. This removed the need for shop attendance to be constantly wondering back and forth to the store room. The attendant could remain with the customer at all times.
One of the fundamental reasons why FileMaker Pro was a good solution for these projects was cost. Had the solutions been built with a web-based technology it would have taken four times longer to build and thus cost four times as much. However there are circumstances where a web-based technology would have been better.
